Check out noteworthy things done and honors received by cities around Idaho as they work to create quality cities.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality recently announced the award of a $37,500 wastewater planning grant to the City of Council. The funds will be used to prepare a wastewater planning study and environmental review. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the current wastewater system and identify necessary improvements. The remaining $37,500 of the $75,000 project will be funded by the City and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development.

The Pocatello/Chubbuck Mayors’ Youth Advisory Council hosted a disc golf scramble on October 14. The scramble was open to local high school students, who were divided into two0player teams. The event was organized into guy, girl, and mixed divisions. Golfers were also entered into drawings to win raffle prizes. Funds raised from the entry fees will help offset the cost of council members attending leadership conferences as well as fund the group’s service projects in the community.

In October, the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission presented “Before All Hallow’s Eve, Share Twilight at Brady Chapel” on Friday the 13th. During the event, attendees heard about the history of the chapel and what is in store for its future; took self-guided tours of the cemetery with flashlights; and participated in a scavenger hunt, collecting images for the hunt with digital cameras or cell phones. Funds from the event will go toward restoration of the sanctuary.

Recently the Pocatello Finance Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for their efforts on the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for Fiscal Year 2016 by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The certificate is the pinnacle of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. This is the 13th year the department has received this certificate.
