Senate Committee Kills AIC-Opposed Annexation Bill

Posted By Johanna M. Bell, Wednesday, March 20, 2019

The Senate Local Government & Taxation Committee voted to kill House Bill 130, an AIC-opposed bill on annexation.

We extend our appreciation to the many city officials who contacted legislators in opposition to the bill.

Excellent testimony was provided at the hearing by AIC Legislative Committee Chair Mayor John Evans of Garden City.

“The primary concern cities have with the bill is that railroad or Interstate highway rights-of-way should not become barriers to annexation,” Mayor Evans said.  “We are also concerned about the impacts of allowing a minority to veto an annexation under Category B.”

The committee members expressed appreciation to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jarom Wagoner, R-Caldwell for digging into a complicated policy issue, but expressed concerns about the bill’s provisions concerning shoe stringing.
