Check out noteworthy things done and honors received by cities around Idaho as they work to create quality cities.

Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA), an important air transportation center for Eastern Idaho, Southern Montana, and Western Wyoming, recently announced new free fiber optic wireless internet for travelers and new lightning-fast speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The high-speed internet connection is provided by the airport through Silver Star Communications.

The Pocatello Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual “Holiday Hoopla” free throw shooting contest to benefit The Idaho Foodbank on December 17. The object is to make as many free throws as possible in one minute for $3. Division winners took home a $50 gift certificate to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The City of Pocatello Flag Design Ad-Hoc Committee received 709 official designs for its flag design contest. 514 entries are from East Idaho, with 31 states and 26 countries from around the globe contributing. The submissions will now be passed on to a panel of expert who will be tasked with selecting the best to be brought back to the public for input. Using input from the public, the ad-hoc committee will then go about designing or selecting a new flag that will be presented to the Pocatello City Council for adoption.

Employees of the City of Pocatello donated more than $25,062 for the United Way of Southeastern Idaho. The gift was collected as part of the group’s annual campaign that began in the fall. Workers were able to select a specific area for their donations, such as helping children and youth succeed; enriching seniors’ lives; increasing self-sufficiency; and promoting health, healing and safe communities. They were also given the options to have the donation passed along to a certain non-profit organization or to allow the United Way to direct the money where it is needed. The average donation was $157.62 for each of the 159 employees who took part.
